JSW Steel Ltd has initiated a ₹16,350 crore project to build a low-carbon steel plant in Andhra Pradesh’s Rayalaseema region, the company announced on Friday. The investment aims to expand domestic steelmaking capacity and promote lower-carbon production. The project will be executed in two phases, starting with a 1 million tonne per annum (mtpa) plant costing ₹4,500 crore.
The first phase will establish the integrated steel plant with a capacity of 1 mtpa. The second phase will involve an additional investment of ₹11,850 crore to double the capacity to 2 mtpa. JSW Steel described the project as part of its broader strategy to accelerate capacity expansion to meet India’s growing manufacturing and infrastructure demand, according to livemint.com.
This investment marks one of the largest in India’s steel sector focused on sustainability and capacity enhancement. JSW Steel is the country’s largest steelmaker, and this project aligns with the industry’s shift towards lower-carbon steel production amid increasing environmental regulations and market demand for greener products. The phased approach allows the company to scale operations while managing capital expenditure.
The project’s first phase, costing ₹4,500 crore, is underway with construction activities initiated this week. The second phase, with a ₹11,850 crore investment, will follow to expand capacity to 2 mtpa. This development positions JSW Steel to strengthen its footprint in Andhra Pradesh and contribute significantly to India’s steel output.
