The number of public Wi-Fi users in India dropped 42.5% to 3 million in the April–June 2026 quarter, down from 5.21 million during the same period last year, according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data. Data consumption on public Wi-Fi also declined 43.2%, falling from 13,281 TB to 7,541 TB in the same period.
This decline continued from the previous quarter, with a 5.5% decrease in users and a 12.1% drop in data use compared to January–March 2026. The number of public Wi-Fi hotspots at the end of June 2026 was 55,230, a 1.8% decrease from March but nearly unchanged year-on-year. Wi-Fi access points also fell 3.9% from last year to 153,950. Gujarat led with 10,460 hotspots, followed by Maharashtra with 5,140, TRAI reported.
Earlier sharp declines in hotspot numbers were linked to CSC Wi-Fi Choupal Services India surrendering its internet service provider licence, which caused hotspots to drop from 164,800 in September 2024 to 46,880 in December 2024. TRAI’s data does not specify hotspot usage or data consumption by state, nor does it include figures for Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Ladakh, or Lakshadweep for June 2026.
The overall decline in public Wi-Fi usage and data consumption reflects ongoing shifts in connectivity preferences, with mobile data usage rising during the same period, TRAI data shows. The next TRAI report covering July–September 2026 is expected to provide further insights into these trends.
